Literacy
Previous and current Horizons Programmes relating to literacy include some of the following topics.

Comics for ESOL
A programme where ESOL students can benefit from recording traditional or personal stories from their home culture onto a comic book page using the Paint and Publisher programmes.
Literacy Extension: “In the news”
This programme offers students the opportunity to visit the newspaper professionals at the Press, learn all about the function and structure of newspapers and then work online to draft and edit content for a mini-newspaper.
Film school
During this programme students learn how to write a script, develop skills in capturing digital video and editing film footage to create a short film using Movie Maker.
Literacy Extension: Blog it!
Students are given the opportunity to create their own blog site using www.blogger.com. Once the set up is done they can personalise their blog and write postings for it. Literacy skills will include analysing other people’s blogs, making constructive comments and linking to useful websites based on your blog topic.
Podcasting: “Story tales”
This programme gives students the opportunity to retell a favourite tale using voice, sound effects and/or music to bring alive the characters using i-Tunes and Audacity to produce a story – podcast to share with friends, family and even other library visitors.
